The Blogger Recognition Award

I really want to thank Mike Senczyszak for nominating me for this great award, I haven’t been blogging for a long time so I feel very privileged to be nominated!

I’ve been following Mike’s blog, Solsbury Hill, for some time know and I’ve really enjoyed  reading his posts because they genuinely touch on interesting and intriguing topics that can affect our everyday lives. Also, he writes about what it’s like to be a blogger, which we can relate to, for example in some of his posts he talks about how he finds it hard to feel motivated to write a post, which I can definitely relate with. I like how unique and honest his writing is. It’s funny because I’ve never really been the type of person to like long, thought proving articles but he is one of the few writers where I enjoy reading these types of posts.

So, how did I get started blogging?

I first started blogging in April because I wanted to write posts about one of my favourite TV shows, Charmed. I first created a website on Weebly however, I didn’t really like the platform because it wasn’t as flexible as I thought a blog would be. If you knew me personally, you might not instantly think of me being a music/personal blogger because I seem like more of a quite and conservative type of person which is one of the reason I didn’t want to start a personal blog. Till this day, I haven’t told most of my closest friends about this blog and trust me if you met the people that go to my school, you would too. I first only considered doing posts about Charmed but later decided to write posts on my personal life to meet more people and share my experiences and thoughts to the world. I am also quite passionate about music and I listen to music wayyy to much so later I decided to create ‘Music Monday’ to share my favourite tunes with you guys.

2 advice for new bloggers:

  1. Try not to put too much pressure on yourself to publish posts often. It’s OK to write 1 or 2 posts per week even though most of you have heard that the more posts you publish, the more views your blog will get. This is true, but its important not to burn yourself out by trying to create new material everyday/every other day.
  2. Be yourself and write posts about things that you genuinely find interesting. If you don’t find it interesting then you’re going to find it hard to have the motivation to write.

Before I nominate 15 great bloggers for this award, thank you again Mike for nominating me! Here are the 15 bloggers I have nominated for this award, I will be sending the rules to each of the nominees:

School’s Out!

I can’t believe that today is the last day of year 12. It feels like it was yesterday when I first walked into the sixth form and met all the new sixth form students if my form. I’m just glad that I have survived this year. Surprisingly, Year 12 wasn’t as stressful as I thought I’d be and honestly… I don’t know why. Most of my friends hated sixth form and wished they went to college instead due to the workload and the amount of stress teachers put on us but I feel like I’ve really kept my head above the water this year. This could be because whenever I get an essay or a big project to complete, I always remind myself that this is only a small challenge that I have to go through that will lead to a great overall result in my A-levels. I have enjoyed year 12 even though there have been some ups and downs throughout the year and I’ll even say that year 12 is probably one of my favourite academic years including year 9 and 10. This is mostly beacuse we got to skip the lunch queue but also beacuse we have more freedom and we can focus on the subjects we enjoy. Next year, we will be only doing 3 subjects, that’s 6 double lessons and lots more free periods! I’ve heard that year 13 is better than year 12 beacuse you get used to the structure and work in sixth form.

I’m also glad that I don’t have any hard summer homework, unlike last summer, which makes the holiday even better however, I think I have to write my personal statement for my UCAS application over summer. If you guys have any tips, please comment them! I was supposed to start writing my personal statement this week but it didn’t happen because I couldn’t access my UCAS account (which is now locked beacuse I tried to log in too many times, LOL) and I couldn’t really be bothered because it’s the last week of school. I had two big projects that I had to give in yesterday for biology and psychology which was a little bit stressful beacuse 1. My statistical analysis was all wrong so that effected the conclusion of my experiment in biology and 2. I didn’t have a debrief form or signatures of my participants in psychology however, I completed both subjects and handed them in one time.

These next 6 weeks of summer will mostly be spent chilling out, relaxing and catching up on all my favourite shows. I’ll be spending a lot of the summer with my family out in Manchester which will be a nice change in scenery. I know some of you guys have already started your summer holiday so please comment on what you’ve been up to/going to be doing this summer!

5 Reasons Why ‘The Perks Of Being A Wallflower’ Is One Of My Favourite Film

The Perks Of Being Wallflower is a movie based on the coming-of-age novel by Stephen Chbosky which, was released September 2012. The film was directed by the novels author and it’s a beautiful mix of comedy, drama and romance. I can’t explain how much I love this film, from the begging to the end it accurately shows what it’s like to be a teenager in school and the pressures you face to fit in and belong.

1) It’s Relatable

Even though the film is set in the early 1990s, teenagers in today’s generation can relate to the movie because the problems that they face in the movie are ones that occur today. Serious issues like sexual abuse, suicide, substance abuse and homophobia are shown in the film and these things could happen or have happened to people like you and me. It’s important we discuss these issues like sexual abuse and see it from a male’s point of view.

2) The Amazing Characters

Sam, Charlie and Patrick are the greatest trio of best friends. Logan Lerman, Emma Watson and Ezra Miller play the roles of their characters amazingly and Logan even kept himself isolated for 2 weeks so he could get into the character of Charlie accurately. Charlie is a sensitive 15-year old who doesn’t have any friends after his best friend committed suicide in middle school and you can see the great bond he has with Sam and Patrick and the rest of the gang.

3) The Living Room Routine

During the school dance, Come On Eileen by Dexys Midnight Runners plays and Sam and Patrick begin to perform their ‘Living Room routine’ on the middle of the dance floor. This is one of the greatest scenes in the movie and you can see how Sam and Patrick couldn’t care less about what the rest of the students think about it.

4) The Great Songs

The soundtrack of this movie has some great songs and it was the first time I heard a song by The Smiths, who are my favourite band. Their track ‘Asleep’ is Charlie’s favourite song in the movie and also one of my favourite songs by the band. Other great tunes include Low by Cracker and of course the tunnel song, which is Heroes by David Bowie.

5) The Quotes

The Perks Of Being A Wallflower contains some amazing quotes that inspire and target the teenage audience and, like most people, my favourite quote in the whole movie is in Charlie’s last monologue:

“Because I know there are people who say all these things don’t happen. And there are people who forget what it’s like to be sixteen when they turn seventeen. I know these will all be stories some day, and our pictures will become old photographs. We all become somebody’s mom or dad. But right now, these moments are not stories. This is happening. I am here, and I am looking at her. And she is so beautiful. I can see it. This one moment when you know you’re not a sad story. You are alive. And you stand up and see the lights on the buildings and everything that makes you wonder. And you’re listening to that song, and that drive with the people who you love most in this world. And in this moment, I swear, we are infinite.”
― Stephen Chbosky, The Perks of Being a Wallflower

No words can explain how much I love the last line “And in this moment, I swear, we are infinite”. This quote could mean a lot of different things for different people but for me It means being at peace with yourself and forgetting about all the pain and heartache you’ve been though in the past and living in the moment! Another quote I love from the movie/book is “We accept the love we think we deserve”, which has really stuck with me since I watched the movie.

The Critical Investigation

This week has mainly consisted of starting the A2 course in school and looking over the topics we’re going to cover in year 13. I must say that some subjects have less interesting topics next year *cough*geography*cough*, but overall I’m quite exited to start the new course.

In psychology, we are going to cover aggression, relationships, biological rhythms etc. in A2 which sounds really interesting, mostly beacuse these are things that affect our everyday lives and you can notice these behaviours around you. Right now we are doing biological rhythms which is mostly about sleep, why we sleep and other biological rhythms like hibernation and the menstrual cycle. I know it sounds a bit boring, but trust me, it is really engaging. I’ve always found psychology so interesting but maybe it’s beacuse I’ve always been keen to know why people do certain things in their lives. I guess beacuse i’m so keen to know these things, it’s probably why I want to do psychology in university.

Even though the psychology A2 course will be really interesting there’s another subject that I’m doing that is really getting me excited for year 13 and that subject is media studies. In the course we have to do a critical investigation which is where we have to write a 2000 word essay on a topic/issue in the media that we’d like to do. This leads to something called the linked production where we have to create a documentary, magazine, film opening or trailer on the topic we chose for our critical investigation. For instance, if you chose to do your critical investigation on the representation of women in the media, you could do a music video or the opening sequence to a documentary on the subject of the representation of women in the media. The reason why this really excites me is beacuse I get to choose a topic that I am passionate about and I can easily convey a message to other people. Some people have been actually thinking about doing the representation of women in the media while others in my class have no clue what topic they’re going to do but, I’ve been thinking about doing my critical investigation about race and discrimination in the media and for the linked production I was thinking of maybe doing the beginning of a documentary on the representation of race in the media. I haven’t made my mind up completely on what topic I will do but I still have some time to develop my ideas before we start planning the production. I’m just really excited to see what the outcome and the production will be like and when I’ve done the production, of course i’ll share it with you guys!

I hope you have had a great week and please comment on what you’ve been up to this week! 🙂

My Much-Needed Break

Technically, I’ve been relaxing for just over a week because my exams have ended however, I have to go back to school this Monday 😢. I’m so happy that I had a week off before returning to school because I don’t have to worry about studying, homework, essays, UCAS or anything. Most people say that doing A-levels was the worst time of their lives due to stress and the humongous workload you’re given and sadly I’d have to agree. You might think that doing only 4 subjects would make it easier to cope with however, there is so much work and lots of content you need to know for the exams/coursework and especially for subjects that have a lot of essay writing e.g. psychology and biology. Most of my friends are having a hard time keeping up with all the work in sixth form and they even say they hate sixth form. One of the reasons a lot of people in my year hate sixth form besides the stress is the fact that some teachers still treat us like 12 year olds but I’m not going to lie because most of the boys in my year are extremely immature so the teachers have to treat them like children. Most of them joke about not getting the grades to move on to sixth form next year, because you need to get 3 D grades to move onto year 13, and lets just say that I wouldn’t be surprised if they didn’t get the grades to stay in sixth form.

I, however, have been trying my best to keep my head above the waters so I don’t drown myself in the stress of all the work we’ve had to endure this whole academic year. I think it’s pointless that we have to come back to school for the last 5 weeks to start our A2 course and our university application process, why couldn’t they just let summer begin now? I must say though, this week is getting even better because my brother is on a school trip to France so I don’t have to deal with his annoying habits until Monday, which is when he returns. My family and I are moving to another house in about 4 weeks so lately my mother has been doing some small packing so we don’t have to rush when the time gets closer. I’m just going to carry on doing what I love to do in my spare which is basically listening to music, watching films, TV shows and anime until I resume school.

I hope you guys have been having a fantastic week and please comment and tell me what you’ve been up to this week!

No More Exams…Until Next Year!

Yes! I’ve officially finished all my exams for this year. I had my last exam for this academic year on Tuesday, which was the biology depth paper (long answer questions) and I must say, the exam paper was sort of weird. I was expecting more content of biology instead of analysing experiments and solving maths questions. I felt like there wasn’t much actual biology from the textbooks and there was more tables and graphs. Due to the fact that students don’t do coursework any more in class, I can understand why they’d add more practical experiments onto the paper however, I don’t believe that these type of questions really test your knowledge in biology. There were lots of topics that we’ve learned that were missed out on the exam paper just to put a whole page of the method and results of some student carrying out an experiment.

Overall, the exam wasn’t bad at all but there was one question that I couldn’t really get my head around until the end of the exam. The question was looking for chi-squared and I honestly had no clue what that was. There was a table with the chi squared equation that I couldn’t figure out until I went back to the question in the end of the exam. I figured out the answer to that question but there was a second table that shows if there was/wasn’t a significant difference. At that point I literally had to guess if there was or wasn’t a significant difference because I didn’t know what that table was actually showing!

Since my last exam, I have just been chilling out since have one week left until I have to go back to school. Right now, I’m just praying that I get excellent grades and that I get the minimum grades I need to get into year 13. It feels amazing not to have to worry about exams and if I’ve done enough revision. I’ve been spending my week watch TV shows, listening to music, writing etc. When I get back to school our A2 course will begin which counts to our exam next year and we will start the UCAS process for university e.g. writing a personal statement. I hope you guys have been having a good week and have a great weekend!

5 Days Of Fasting

Fasting is defined as ‘abstaining from all or some kinds of food or drink, especially as a religious observance’. This week I’ve been fasting everyday until 3pm and praying because my Church is going to a programme on Sunday where Pastor Chris (the president of our whole ministry) will be preaching and doing communion. This is my first time fasting more than two days in a row and I found it easier than I expected. I don’t know why, but I’ve always thought fasting would be REALLY exhausting and you’d be on the verge of death by the end of the day, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Yes, it can be hard because you’re tempted to eat or drink something however, it gets easier as you keep on doing it. It’s very important to pray when fasting, ideally every 2 hours, because if you don’t you’re basically on a hunger strike.

During this week I have done a lot of studying for my last biology exam which is on Tuesday and I’ve been catching up on TV shows e.g. Hunter x Hunter. If you haven’t watched that anime then I highly recommend that you do because it’s awesome, shoutout to Canary. If you watch Hunter x Hunter you’ll understand 😉 I can’t wait for my last exam to be over because we’ve been put on a lot of pressure from the teachers to do well in our A-levels. This is mainly because we had the greatest GCSE results in year 11 ever in our school and they expect the same for our AS exams. Also, the fact that most subjects have their exams all at the end Year 13 puts more stress on us to do even better next year.

This week I got the amazing opportunity to put my content on My Trending Stories so please check out my articles on the website and check out other awesome bloggers!
